At Long Island, New York on August 27, 1776 the Battle of Long Island finally has come to a stop. The British won, and the Patriots are headed back to where they have come from. This battle lasted so long, and some lost their lives. But now it is finally to a stop. To stop the war, the British slowly pushed the Patriots back until General George Washington knew it was too dangerous, and lead his troops out. In the month of July, the British were just getting ready. They came to Staten Island on the 2nd of July and made forts to show that they were here to do what they where told and wern't leaving until it was done. While this was going on, Washington was just figuring out what their plans were. But, by the 12th of July Major General Richard Howe had brought over more troops to help in the battle. George Washington did not know this so he was caught off guard with the 100+ ships with over 40 cannons coming towards Long Island.
On the 22nd of August, the British landed on long island rested and ready to restore their power. And, on land they sent bombs and smoke balls flying towards the American colonists. There were thirdy thousand British soldiers fighting against nine thousand colonists, and with that, the colonists had to flee the scene. But on the 26th of August, the British found them and started going around them to sneak attack them from the front.
It is now the 27th of August and the battle is still on. Grant is leading his troops of 5000 men north along the Gowanus Road and began skirmishing with the Patriots. The 28th, severe rain storms put the battle to a halt. 29th, Washington is deciding to call off his men. 30th, the last Patriots leave the battle. There are no more Patriots fighting in the battle. The British won. After General Washington and his army made a stunning escaped from the Battle of Long Island and the war was over, the news spreading all over. With the news of the England’s victory spreading to London they celebrated the victory against the American army and the end of the war. Washington tried fighting back against General Howe’s even when the British took the American’s fortifications. General Howe had defeated Washington again at White Plains, and is now heading of f to fort Washington with high hopes of once again beating the American General.
